What Are Green Credits?
Green Credits are a new way for companies to turn environmental action into measurable, tradable value. Under India’s Green Credit Programme (GCP), launched by the Ministry of Environment in 2023, businesses can earn credits for real, verifiable activities like afforestation or water conservation.
Each credit reflects one unit of environmental benefit — like a tree planted and survived for two years, audited and certified by ICFRE (Indian Council of Forestry Research & Education).

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Green Credit Programme (GCP)?
Launched by the Government of India in Oct 2023, the GCP rewards verified environmental actions like tree planting with tradable credits, supporting afforestation, land restoration, and India’s net-zero goals.
Who can participate?
Anyone — companies, PSUs, NGOs, individuals, and societies — can register and earn credits for qualifying projects.
How is land selected?
State forest authorities list degraded land parcels (min. 5 hectares) on the GCP portal for approved plantation projects.
Who is a Green Credit Applicant (GCA)?
Any registered participant — from individuals to corporates — who applies online, selects land, and funds plantation activities.

Minimum 5 hectares with at least 1,100 trees per hectare. Credits are issued after 2 years if trees survive and are verified by ICFRE.
